Mustang Volleyball: Serving Up Competition

by Skylar Steele, 11th

The season closed with a 6-11 record by the Mustangs volleyball team, and skill, teamwork, and determination were highlighted as the heart of every match. From lightning-fast serves to unstoppable spikes, the Mustangs showed the entire school why they’re the team to watch. Fans witnessed high-energy games full of intense rallies and unforgettable plays.

While the roster spans sophomores to seniors, the juniors bring an especially electric spark. Setter and defensive specialist Leanna Divinity (’27) knows that success isn’t about height or speed—it’s about effort and mindset. “In volleyball it doesn’t matter how tall or fast you are. You just have to work hard, push yourself, and keep your grades up,” she says. Leanna’s leadership shines through in every huddle, lifting teammates and keeping morale high no matter the score.

Another junior, Zadia Talton (’27), brings competitive energy and balance to the court. She shared that she’d loved volleyball since elementary school and started in middle school. She urged future players to “start early” and be willing to switch teams for better chances. She stated the toughest challenge for her would be juggling a middle-opposite with a 4-2 rotation, and improving back-row passing and line coverage. During games she keeps teammates uplifted without yelling, offering gentle reminders to “give themselves grace.”

For Ayanna Williams (’27), volleyball started as a way to push herself out of her comfort zone—and quickly became a passion. “It’s a mental sport, so you have to stay strong through everything,” she explains. From constantly practicing to perfecting her serve to bonding with teammates on trips, Ayanna represents the resilience and team spirit that define the Mustangs’ season.

Sophomores are stepping up too, confirming that the future of Mustang volleyball is in good hands. Makaylen Broadway (‘28) highlights how practices push everyone to improve together, reinforcing the unity that drives the team’s success. Every drill, every set, and every match is a chance to grow, and this mindset has helped the Mustangs build chemistry both on and off the court.

Together, Mustangs don’t just play to win—they play to grow. Losses turn into lessons, every huddle strengthens their connection, and each game showcases the determination, teamwork, and Mustang pride that fuels their momentum. The Mustangs are proving they’re not just fierce competitors this season—they’re a team shaping a lasting legacy.
